1/9/2023 0 Comments Jibber jabbingBut besides, who the hell cares? We’ve long gone past knowing how to value a product. But any large company has to have a lot of people to spread the blame around when a product is a failure (meaning fails to reach somewhat arbitrary goals), and given the restrictive job market these days, that doesn’t come cheap. In the case of Jeep they have a lot of aftermarket “designers” who do most of the early product testing, so that probably helps. But the labor to design it, engineer the production line to accommodate it and (mostly) the marketing are getting more expensive. It’s all cheap materials, getting cheaper all the time. The basic package ought to be available for under $20k. This is jibber-jabbing, drooling madness. The thing will sticker for almost $40k – to start. One can almost see the Jenga Tower beginning to lean, eh? But Jeep loads the thing up with gadgets and amenities – because most people insist on them and can get financing. I just finished writing a reply to a reader who asked about the new Jeep Gladiator – which is a Wrangler with a small bed. The problem is one of assuming massive, unsustainable debt to “keep up” with the “latest thing.” There is nothing wrong, per se, with gadgets. They probably also have an expensive smartphone and other gadgets. Yet most of these people drive a late-model vehicle. I’ve read that more than half the population could not come up with $1,000 cash for an emergency without having to borrow it. It is now – get a loan for whatever you want. The general American attitude used to be – buy what you can afford. But equally driving this bus off the cliff is the finance crack of easy credit on depreciating appliances. I rail often about compliance costs – which are enormous. This is a clear barometer of an unsustainable gap between what people are buying and what they can afford to buy. Car loans are now on average twice the duration they were – and (per the article) leasing has exploded to almost a third of all transactions. The signs are neon backlit and flashing obvious at this point – but few notice. I, too, have been in the biz a long time now – formally, for the past 25 years. I feel like a man howling into the wind sometimes. This stopped abruptly when gas stations made the minimum fuel fill was established at about ten gallons. All that happened was that the average fuel quantity in fuel tanks went from about four gallons to nearly twenty. Just recall all the made hysteria during the two gas “shortages” of about twenty years ago, with crazed motorists driving around hysterically constantly looking for an open gas station at which to top off. Sometimes gradually and gently but more often with much pain and suffering. This can’t go on – and when something can’t go on it finally stops. Actually, the cars haven’t increased in price – the value of our currency has decreased, and by about 90 percent vs. Now half the new cars in the US are leased. Back then fully half of all new cars in the UK were leased. John writes: As one who spent his entire career in the carbiz (after the military) and owned several new-car dealerships, I’d like to add the following: We’re now precisely where the UK (the Uck) was fifty years ago. There are basic and advanced versions of both classes, as there are of all classes, including Basilisks, Marauders, Dragoons, and Tyrants, which arrive on the scene later. Dretches are soldiers, used for attacking humans and human structures. Grangers are builders - they build structures to support alien activities. In the beginning, there are only two alien classes: Grangers and Dretches. Both species have structures peculiar to themselves. There is one major difference between the species, beyond being on different teams. During the game, each side progresses through three stages, with advanced abilities and equipment coming in during the second and third stages. Tremulous is basically a struggle between two teams: the humans, a species I will assume you are familiar with, and the aliens, which look like bugs and sometimes crawl along walls and ceilings. I double-clicked on it and was connected. There it was: Wart’s Lair appeared as my only choice for a server. I started the game, selected Local, and then Refresh List. Then it was back to my everyday desktop machine to try it out. I wanted to be able to test Tremulous locally, so I started the Tremulous client on an otherwise idle workstation, clicked Create Server, selected a map, and changed the name to Wart’s Lair. For a quick pick-up game on the LAN, all you need do is choose the Create Server option from the client. Which to use? If you are setting up a dedicated machine for Tremulous game play on the Internet, choose tremded, for continuity if for no other reason. There isn’t a lot of documentation available on tremded, but it comes with a sample configuration file in the install subdirectory, and there is another version of server.cfg on, an independent Tremulous site. You can run it as a completely stand-alone, dedicated process using the included tremded program, or you can run a server and client on one machine simultaneously. Tremulous is based on a client-server architecture, but you have a choice as to how to run the server. In each case, all it took was entering the following command as root and then following the prompts: I downloaded the Linux version of Tremulous 1.1.0 - it also runs on Windows - from the files page on and installed it on an IBM ThinkPad T40 laptop, a desktop box, and a workstation. Tremulous uses the free software version of the Quake 3 engine, which was released under the GPL by id Software last year. Tremulous, a mixture of FPS and RTS (real-time strategy) written by Tim Angus, is an exception to that rule. Here, Linux is an afterthought, if not ignored completely. Linux and open source software lag behind the proprietary market in the number and quality of available video games, especially in the realm of first-person shooters (FPS), a genre dominated by the likes of Doom, Quake, Unreal, Half-Life, and Halo. It makes the set lighter, while still retaining the armor’s protective properties. One way to shave off some of the weight from an armor set is to use an Armor Reduction Kit. With players only able to hold a set amount of stuff, keeping armor as light as possible is key. Much of the armor in the game contains extra aesthetic flourishes which, while looking pretty cool, do add to the overall weight of the set. There’s a wide breadth of armor to choose from in Conan Exiles, from simple bone and feather sets to heavy plate armor. If you tab over to the Stats screen you will see the effect of that armor as Total Damage Reduction X (bottom). There’s extensive customization options on offer, with players able to build their very own barbarian, and equip them with custom outfits and weapons. It is set in the world of Conan the Barbarian, with the character rescuing the player at the start of the game. Saint Vitus has developed a reputation over the years: It is the fucking best place to see dark, heavy, noisy, loud, corrosive, INSANE music. It’s the kind of place people say they miss when they sigh about the “old New York,” but you’re in luck–it’s right here! Drop by sometime. The shows are always free and are offered about four times a week, with local pianists holding down brunch slots on Friday nights and both weekend days. Manhattan is both special and pulls it off, incorporating yes, piano, but also karaoke, jazz quartets, local songwriters and even a late night R&B club night into their diverse live music offering. It takes a special kind of places to assume the fold the adage “piano bar” into its title and really pull it off.
